Every FAA document the Private Pilot ACS cites for a single-engine land applicant, in its current edition, with a reading plan chapter by chapter, the regulations section by section, and every ACS task with its own reference line and where to start.
Two PDF editions: the full edition (the Download button) lists every knowledge, risk management and skill element with a box to tick; the roadmap edition is the same plan without the element lists. This page follows the roadmap; each task below opens to show its elements.
How to use this plan
RunupLab study advice: study advice from RunupLab, not FAA text- Work task by task. Each ACS task lists the ACS's own reference line and RunupLab's pointers for where to start reading.
- Read the chapters marked Core first and skim the ones marked Skim. Chapters marked Skip for ASEL are, in RunupLab's judgment, not needed for an airplane single-engine land private pilot.
- Tick a box when you can explain the item to your instructor without notes.
- FAA documents change. This plan names the edition it was built from; check faa.gov for a newer one before you rely on it.

The practical test
“There is no requirement for an evaluator to test every knowledge and risk management element in a Task; rather the evaluator has discretion to sample as needed to ensure the applicant’s mastery of that Task. The required minimum elements to be tested from each applicable Task include:

- any elements in which the applicant was shown to be deficient on the knowledge test, as applicable;
- at least one knowledge element;
- at least one risk management element; and
- all skill elements unless otherwise noted.”

“The References for each Task indicate the source material for Task elements. For example, in the Task element “Acceptable weather products and resources required for preflight planning, current and forecast weather for departure, en route, and arrival phases of flight such as:” (PA.I.C.K2), the applicant should be prepared for questions on any weather product presented in the references for that Task.”
