Airspace: entry, equipment, minimums

What it takes to get in, what has to be installed, how fast you may go, and the weather you need — quoted from 14 CFR rather than summarised. Three things here are printed differently from most cards, because the regulation reads differently from the shorthand: Class G at night is not the reduced-minimums case, the two 10,000-foot equipment rules cover different airspace, and Special VFR is a clearance you request, not a lower-minimums default.

2 · Transponder and ADS-B Out are different rules

The transponder rule says “all airspace”; the ADS-B rule says “Class E airspace”. Both exclude the airspace at and below 2,500 feet above the surface. A card that merges them into one line is wrong about one of them.

3 · Speed limits

§ 91.117

REGULATION
  • 250 knots below 10,000 feet MSL§ 91.117(a)Unless otherwise authorized by the Administrator, no person may operate an aircraft below 10,000 feet MSL at an indicated airspeed of more than 250 knots (288 m.p.h.).

4 · VFR weather minimums — the whole table

CHECKRIDE TRAPTECHNIQUEThe rows marked = C/D/E are the ones people get backwards. Class G at night below 10,000 MSL is 3 statute miles and 500/1,000/2,000 — the same as Class C, D and E. The reduced numbers are the daytime cases. “Class G means lower minimums” is true by day and false by night.

5 · Special VFR — a clearance, not a default

§ 91.157

REGULATION

Except as provided in appendix D, section 3, of this part, special VFR operations may be conducted under the weather minimums and requirements of this section, instead of those contained in § 91.155, below 10,000 feet MSL within the airspace contained by the upward extension of the lateral boundaries of the controlled airspace designated to the surface for an airport.§ 91.157(a)

Special VFR operations may only be conducted—§ 91.157(b)

  • With an ATC clearance;§ 91.157(b)(1)
  • Clear of clouds;§ 91.157(b)(2)
  • Except for helicopters, when flight visibility is at least 1 statute mile; and§ 91.157(b)(3)

Except for helicopters, between sunrise and sunset (or in Alaska, when the sun is 6 degrees or less below the horizon) unless—§ 91.157(b)(4)

  • Pilot — The person being granted the ATC clearance meets the applicable requirements for instrument flight under part 61 of this chapter; and§ 91.157(b)(4)(i)
  • Aircraft — The aircraft is equipped as required in § 91.205(d).§ 91.157(b)(4)(ii)
CHECKRIDE TRAPTECHNIQUEA clearance, not a default. Special VFR is a clearance you request from ATC — not a fallback for when the § 91.155 minimums above are out of reach, and not guaranteed: a controller may deny it for traffic or workload, appendix D, section 3 bars it outright at some airports, and at night it takes a pilot who meets part 61’s applicable requirements for instrument flight, in an aircraft equipped as § 91.205(d) requires — not just a request.

The traffic-pattern rule changed in October 2025

§ 91.126(b) — most printed material still has the old text

MOSAIC rewrote § 91.126(b) effective 22 October 2025. It used to say “Each pilot of an airplane must make all turns of that airplane to the left” and put helicopters and powered parachutes in a second category. It now reads:

Each pilot of a powered fixed-wing aircraft must make all turns to the left unless the airport displays approved light signals or visual markings indicating that turns should be made to the right, in which case the pilot must make all turns to the right; and

§ 91.126(b)(1)

Any FAR/AIM, handbook or kneeboard card printed before October 2025 carries the old wording. And because § 91.127(a) and § 91.129(a) incorporate § 91.126, the amended rule reaches Class E and Class D airports too — not just Class G.
