How far from the target to start down at YOUR planned rate — no baked-in 3:1 rule: minutes of descent × groundspeed. Coming down 6,000 ft at 500 fpm and 120 kt over the ground means starting 24 nm out. Zero or climbing "descent rates" show an em-dash rather than a bogus distance.
